The Gospel

The Gospel or “Good News” is described in Acts as: “preaching good news concerning God’s Kingdom and the name of Jesus Christ1“.

Another well known passage is in Mar 1:14: “Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the Good News of God’s Kingdom.” and this theme can be found in many other passages as well2.

The Gospel is offered to everyone3, but it is only an opportunity. There is a responsibility for those who hear to to respond to the opportunity. Jesus taught a very relevant parable about those who hear the Gospel called the Parable of the Sower4. In that Parable the “seed” or the Good News was sown onto four different type of ground:

  • The Path
  • Rocky Ground
  • Thorny Ground
  • Good Ground

The Good News that fell on the Path was immediately rejected. The Good News that fell on the Rocky Ground didn’t last long because it had no root. The Good News that fell on the Thorny Ground was choked by other things (distractions) growing at the same time and eventually died. Only the Good News that landed in the Good Soil survived and this was easily distinguished from the other types of soil because it survived and produced “fruit”. This teaches us that the Good News must produce a change in us for it to be effective.
