Promises to Abraham
Abraham was a very faithful man who originally lived in the city of Ur1 in the country that is generally believed to be Mesopotamia. At the command of God he went to the land of Israel. As a result of his faith in God, he was given a number of Promises on several different occasions. Refer to the Abraham page for more details on those events and when they occured in his life.
The promises can be grouped into three main categories: land, descendants, and blessing.
- The Promise of Land (A National Territory)2
- The Promise of Descendants (A Great Nation)3
- 3. The Promise of Blessing (Personal and Universal)4
These promises were interspersed with signs by God to test Abraham and assure Abraham of their reliability of the oaths:
- The Blood Ritual (Genesis 15): God performed a formal ancient covenant ceremony where split animal carcasses were laid out. In a display of absolute commitment, God alone (passed through the pieces as a smoking firepot and blazing torch), showing that He took the sole responsibility to fulfill the oath.
- The Sign of Circumcision (Genesis 17): God demanded a physical reminder of the covenant, establishing circumcision as the permanent token of the contract for all generations.
- The Ultimate Test (Genesis 22): After Abraham demonstrated his radical faith by his willingness to sacrifice his son Isaac, God swore an unchangeable oath by Himself, reaffirming all the promises.
In the New Testament, these promises were fulfilled through Jesus Christ. The Apostle Paul teaches in Galatians 3:16 that the primary “seed” or offspring promised to Abraham was Christ himself.
Now the promises were spoken to Abraham and to his offspring. He doesn’t say, “To descendants”, as of many, but as of one, “To your offspring”, which is Christ.
(Gal 3:16)
The universal blessing promised to Abraham is fulfilled because salvation through Jesus is offered freely to everyone. Anyone who has faith in Christ is considered a spiritual descendant and heir to Abraham’s promises:
If you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s offspring and heirs according to promise.
(Gal 3:29)
