History

Abraham was originally known as “Abram”. He was born in Ur, a city in the land of Chaldeans.

Abram’s father Terah left Ur with Abram, Abram’s wife Sarai and Lot (Abram’s nephew) and went to Haran. Terah died in Haran but God appeared to Abram in the first of the great promises. God asked Abram to go to the land that “God would show him” [Gen 12:1] Abram travelled to Shechem in the land of Canaan (modern day Israel) with Sarai and Lot. There God promised that this was the land that Abram’s descendants would possess. From Shechem, Abram travelled near to Bethel and on to the Negeb.

Due to a famine in the land, Abram took his extended family to Egypt
