Overview

Adam was created by God from the dust of the ground on the sixth day of Creation by breathing His Spirit into him.1 He was created in the “image” of God {“eloheem”).2 God gave Adam the plants as food3 but commanded him not to eat of the “Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil”.4 Adam was giving the task of naming the animals but at the conclusion of this process, none of the animals were found to be a suitable “helper” for him.5

As a result God caused Adam to fall into a deep sleep and took a rib from his side to create a woman who Adam named Eve.

Later, Eve was deceived by a serpent6 and ate of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. This had monumental consequences as Eve became subject to death as promised by God7 but she also became “like God” knowing Good and Evil.8 Eve gave this fruit to Adam who also consumed the fruit, contrary to God’s command and he likewise inherited knowledge and a mortal nature.

God discovered this disobedience and rather than instantly killing them for their disobedience, God set in motion his plan for salvation for those who repent and believe in God. This manifested in a number of of “curses” on Adam, Eve and the serpent but also incorporated was a Promise that God would one day overcome the sin that had just entered the world.
