Samuel was dedicated to God by his mother Hannah, and so was taken to live in the tabernacle once “she weaned him” (Samuel 1:23). He was brought up by Eli the high priest, but saw his biological family every year when they came to the tabernacle for yearly sacrifices. God spoke directly to him as a youth, giving him a prophecy condemning Eli’s bloodline for “the iniquity that he knew” (1 Samuel 3:13).
